York
in Danger
Unbelievable but true. You don't
have to be from Yorkshire, or even from England, to know that the
beautiful city of York should be immune from insensitive
developers.
The people of York are determined to stop
the development of a shopping mall next to the
internationally-renowned ancient monument of Clifford's Tower.
The City of York Council gave permission for a
London-based developer, Land Securities, to build "Coppergate
II" - a shopping centre on both sides if the river Foss in
York. This includes building right up to the Tower.
We just cannot accept our heritage being subsumed by a shopping
centre when many shops lay empty and indigenous traders are
already under pressure.
It's particularly galling as the development would be the biggest
ever undertaken in the centre of York and could quite easily
take place on one side of the river without interfering with the
"castle" side.
